You can recognize  the miniature Mt.Fuji  at Suizenji Kohen in Kumamoto.(=kohen 公園 means park in Japanese)

Where is Suizenji Kohen(水前寺公園)- Garden park ?

Hello!
I ‘ll tell you about Suizenji Kohen , one of the most famous, beautiful Japanese garden park in Kumamoto City.
See the hand drawing map below.  Red spot roughly  shows where Kumamoto is .

Kumamoto is located in the middle west of Kyushu Island in Japan.

Detailed map here!

Access to Suizenji Kohen

Taking city tram from  JR(Japan Railway) Kumamoto Station, or Kumamoto Castle stop is convenient and good idea.

It takes approximately 30 minutes from JR Kumamoto station to Suizenji Kohen  stop.  From Kumamoto Catsle, it takes much less. Kumamoto catsle and Suizenji park are not far each other.

Please get off ” Suizenji Kohen “stop.
You ‘ll see the guide board. It’s only a few minute walk  from the tram stop to the entrance of Suizenji Kohen.

Pathway with shops and ” Kumamon”, the bear

From the tram stop to the entrance of Suizenji Kohen, there are many souvenir shops along the street. My favorite Kumamon, mascot character black bear, are here and there.

Kumamon (mascot black bear ) says ” Welcome to Suizenji Kohen!”

You see green wood , don’t you?  There is the entrance of the Garden.
You need pay admission fee there.

Admission 400 JP Yen (Adult / person)  Child (under 12 ys .) 200 JP Yen.

Opening Hours:
March-November 7.30am-6pm
December-February 8.30am-5pm

Suizenji Kohen, Garden Park

This beautiful strolling garden with  tea arbor in Kumamoto was built  in 1632 (Edo era)
by three Hosokawa  lords.

Suizenji Garden is located near the center of Kumamoto City, though  its  area is so wide, about  64.6 hectares.

(Like Lake Biwa, clean water of large pond is spring water  from Aso mountains)

Suizenji Kohen , this garden layout  imitates  the 53 Stations or Post Towns of the old Tokaido way between Km Aso mountains)yoto and Tokyo.

Suizenji Garden has , miniature Mount Fuji and clean big pond is made as  Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan, near Kyoto,

( photo  I took in February, 2013.  It was like paradise for birds, ducks, seagulls , herons)

 Clean water with carp.

IZUMI  Shrine

There is  Izumi Shrine (dedicated ancestors of Hosokawa family ). Top photo, and below. (2017 )

Inari Shrine

An  Inari Shrine, with many vermillion torii gates lined up . There was the biggest Stone made torii gate .
( ↓ first photo I took in 2013)

However, the big Kumamoto Earthquake in April 2016, the biggest Stone made Torii gate fell down, it has been still missing. (2nd photo , I took in 2017)

Chozu: the place for ritual cleansing of hands and mouth with water when visiting shrine before praying)

(photo in 2017. Chozu water was safe, after the earthquake,  but  the roof parts were damaged, and still missing)

(photo in 2017.  Another Choze, calld  ” Goshin sui” (means Holy Water) also had no roof top because of the earthquake)

Photo below: This is  Noh stage (with Noh performances in spring and fall)

You need about 30-40 minutes to walk around the Suizenji Kohen garden park.

Here  is also a nice spot for cherry blossom viewing or just relaxing in general.

Not only tourists , Kumamoto citizen love Suizenji Kohen garden park.

It’s not far from center of Kumamoto town.
I really recommend to visit here .

photo in February 2013. Izumi Shrine ‘s  big torii gate was there.

Now it missing .  Plum blossom was in full bloom in the end of Feburuary.  Smells so nice, and countless birds were singing among trees.  It was so beautiful!

Do not miss it!   Every season, Suizenji Kohen Garden park welcome YOU  with different beauty, I bet.
